Gmorning, Gnight: little pep talks for me & you

Lin Manuel Miranda is a writing genius. In Gmorning, Gnight, he’s created witty, meaningful little boosters after you’ve had your morning coffee, or your evening tea. He continually reminds his readers that they are worth something to the world, that they just need a little pep talk to help them keep going.

Jonny Sun’s illustrations reminds me of Shel Silverstein’s drawings from Where the Sidewalk Ends. They are smart, cute drawings that help brings Miranda’s works to life. While I haven’t read Sun’s works, I’m interested in what he’s created, because I’m drawn to his artwork–no pun intended.

If you’re feeling on top of the world, read Gmorning, Gnight. If you’re having a rough day, or are in a tough spot, read Gmorning, Gnight. While some critics have clearly panned Lin Manuel’s book, a compilation of tweets he wrote, I find them endearing. I find myself liking specific poems, because they remind me of me, or of my boyfriend.

I know this is a short review, but really, this book is one you have to read in order to fully grasp the joy and cleverness that can be found in Gmorning, Gnight. It’s one of those books you have to experience in order to enjoy it fully.

When I say that Lin Manuel’s work reminds me of what Shel Silverstein did for children’s literature, only for adults, I say it with sincerity and pride. As an adult, I need something like these pep talks to remind me that yes, I can accomplish everything I need to in a day. And if not, there’s always tomorrow to look forward to. There’s too much sarcasm and put-downs in the world already. I just need something positive every once in a while; we all do.

What are you waiting for? Go read Gmorning, Gnight already!
